So before the holiday break I was stumped with a question by a patient. I take a lot of pride being able to explain all things dental so when I was asked, “Why are wisdom teeth called wisdom teeth?” I was a little annoyed that I didn’t know the answer! I’m sure I had heard it before somewhere but that particular tid-bit of trivia had escaped me.
But before we get to that, I hope everyone had a safe and festive holiday season. It seems I was just getting used to saying and writing 2016 and now it’s gone!
I wanted to take a minute and thank everyone for what has turned out to be a great year here at our office. In 2016 we had a lot of changes. We rolled out a new name, new website, added Saturdays and brought in a few new faces. Now like most of you I’m not big on change, but our goal with everything we have done has been to make dental care as accessible as possible and I’m pleased at how many have taken advantage of the new hours and the extra hygiene times we’ve added with our third Hygienist, Heather.
I also want to thank everyone for the abundance of positive reviews we’ve received this year. We sincerely appreciate the fact that so many have taken the time to write one, and the kind words have been overwhelming.
Many of you have referred family and friends to our office and we can’t thank you enough. Your continued support and faith in us is greatly appreciated, and we will continue to strive to provide you the best experience possible.
Now I know you’re dying to know the answer so I won’t make you wait a second longer. In the seventeenth century, third molars were referred to as the “teeth of wisdom” mainly because they arrived during the time when one was transitioning from childhood to adulthood. This was seen as the pinnacle of wisdom so the moniker stuck. During the nineteenth century it was shortened to “wisdom teeth.” Not as profound as I was hoping but at least now I won’t forget it!
On behalf of Dr. Little and our entire staff, I wish everyone a happy 2017. Thank you for your patronage and support.
To your happy and healthy smile – Dr. Schwab
